Stretch

  • To to wake students up, you can get them to stand in a circle and do a few physical warm-up exercises together. These are mainly stretching exercises like touching your toes five times. It works and it's fun. You can then get on with a productive lesson. Can do this before or during a lesson.

Find your other half

  • Make cards with 1 half of a word pair on each; these pairs should be simple e.g.. salt + pepper, happy + birthday, living + room. Give each student 1 card and ask them to think about the word that would make a good pair. Then ask the students to mingle to find their pair and then ask the new partners to sit down together as partners. When all the students are sitting down ask them to tell the class their word pair. This is a good way to get students to repair for an exercise.

Simon says

Students should only obey the commands if you preface each one with "Simon says". If you omit the preface "Simon says" any student who obeys the command can no longer participate in the game. The last student to remain in the game is the winner. Or you could give students 3 lives.
OR: Instead of Simon says, you could say "Do as I say, don't do as I do."
  • Simon says: "hands up", "hands down", "thumbs up", "thumbs down", "fingers up", "fingers down".
  • Simon says: "touch your eyes / ears / nose / mouth with the forefinger / middle finger / ring finger / little finger / of your (right) (left) hand.
  • Simon says: "put your right hand / left hand / both hands on your right / left knee."
  • Simon says: "shut / open your eyes", "stand up / sit down", "stand on your right / left leg".
  • Simon says: "bend your knees / body", "straighten your knees / body".
  • Simon says: "fold your arms", "put your arms by your side".
  • Simon says: "wave your right hand", "STOP", "jump up and down", "STOP".
  • Simon says: "point at the ceiling / floor with the forefinger/ middle finger / ring finger / little finger / of your right / left hand.

Blindfold directions

  • Another thing students can quickly get into after a little shock at doing something they haven’t since they were 10 is doing things with their eyes closed or with a blindfold on. The most physically interactive version is to get students to stand up and be guided to somewhere else in the classroom by their classmates’ instructions. For students who would be shy standing up, you can do the same with an obstacle course of rulers etc. on the table.

Change chairs if

  • Organise chairs into a circle, there should be enough chairs for all the students to sit down, leave a space for you to stand. You say "Change chairs if... e.g. you are wearing jeans","all the students this is true for should change chairs, you should try to sit down, and the person without a chair is next to say "change chairs if..." It is not allowed to change chairs with the person next to you.

Music and instructions

  • Play music. Stop it and then give instructions.
  • Get into groups of 4.
  • Shake hands with as many people as possible.
  • Get into groups of people with same height as you.
  • Get into groups of 3 and agree on a song you want to sing
  • Find people who's birthday is in the same month as yours
  • Touch something white
  • After 5 - 8 instructions, start getting students out. For example, with the instruction, "Get into groups of 7!" the students left out need to sit down. They are out of the game.

Line up according to

  • Tell all the students to find a new seat in the room (or stand in a line), ranging from highest to lowest around the tables, ideas could be: birthdays, time they got up, number of letters in their name etc. Once the students have taken a new seat, check the answers with all the students.

Word Cards

  • Take a sentence out of the course book. Put words onto 5 - 15 pieces of paper and hand to students. They need to line up to create a sentence. One students goes up at a time. They can move up and down the line.
  • Could give some students a blank card and they can be any word they want.

Walking Warmers

10 - 15 seconds each. 5 minutes in total. Also can let students become instructor and make own commands.

As individuals

Tell the students to walk about:
  • - as if they are exhausted
  • - as if they have just heard some wonderful news
  • - as if they are carrying a heavy suitcase
  • - as if it is bitterly cold
  • - as if they don't want to be seen
  • - as if they are a little child
  • - as if they are very old
  • - as if they are ten feet tall
  • - as if they are walking on ice
  • - as if they are sleepwalking
  • - as if they are a king or queen walking to the coronation
  • - as if they are crossing a stream on stepping stones
  • - as if they are a beggar
  • - as if they have stolen goods on their person
  • - as if they are walking on a tightrope

Relating to others

  • - nodding and smiling at each other
  • - greeting each other in a familiar way perhaps by shaking hands and slapping each other on the shoulder
  • - greeting each other as if they have not seen each other for a long time
  • - behaving towards each other as if the other person was offensive the last time they met
  • - behaving as if they do not really like each other
  • - behaving as though the other person is deaf
  • - behaving as if the other person has bad breath
  • - behaving as though they think the other person is stupid
  • - behaving as though they think the other person is dangerous
  • - behaving as though the other person is an extremely distinguished and elderly person
  • - greeting each other and saying anything which comes into their heads
